The last sighting of theBurning "Man" was in 2019, followed by two years of cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although there were lowkey gatherings and burns, the officialBurningMan event is back in full swing this summer.
This year's theme is Waking Dreams, representing the transformative power of dreams, literally and figuratively. It's an homage to Black Rock City being a collective manifestation of the community's dreams.

What Is Burning Man?
BurningMan is a communal event that takes place at the end of summer each year. The event operates under 10 principles, which are reflected by the event itself and the people who attend.

Based on these principles, it's clear thatBurningMan isn't your average event. In fact, it's more of a community made up of artists, creators, free-spirits, community organizers, and people looking for a spiritual or cathartic experience.
The highlight of the event is the actualBurningMan, where thousands of Burners gather around a large wooden effigy known as theMan for a celebratoryburning. This takes place on the Saturday before Labour Day.
BurningMan has been up and running since 1991. Located in Nevada's temporary Black Rock City, which sits in the vast Black Rock Desert. This year's BurningMan is from August 28 to September 5.
Is Burning Man A Festival?
It might surprise you thatBurningMan is far from your average festival. In fact, it's not really a festival at all. Nothing is planned atBurningMan besides the actualBurning of theMan on Saturday night.
There are community organizers that plan small art-themed events, which you can attend if you wish. Other than that, everything and anything is up to you to explore and discover.
There are no scheduled performances or acts atBurningMan, considering it's not really a festival but more of a cultural movement surrounding a tightly-knit community of free spirits, artists, and creatives.
What To Do At Burning Man

Now that you knowBurningMan isn't an actual festival, you might wonder what people do there.
Of course, the main event is Saturday night's iconicburning of the wooden effigy, theMan. This always takes place on the 7th day of the event, the Saturday before Labour Day.
Other than that, attendees are free to explore the grounds and get to know their temporary community. One of the 10 principles ofBurningMan is participation, and the event actively invites you to participate by volunteering, joining or creating a camp, or making art for the art installations.
The entire week is basically an off-the-grid living experience where you're encouraged to get to know the surrounding community and make up your plans as you go.
